Our Country Today Series: Police Intimidation and ensuing curfew

Somaliland Police is on the streets of the capital tonight searching vehicles in the city and those entering the city while ordering drivers to go home early and warning them of restricted movement in place. This has become as a surprise to the people living in Hargeisa who have not known about any curfew. Police are standing guard on the streets in big numbers searching vehicles moving in the city. No body knows why their city is taken over by police and the reason for this intimidation but today President Dahir Riyale imprisoned Mujahid Ahmed Omar Haji Abdullahi, the Chairman of Kulmiye party’s Hargeisa region. Mujahid Ahmed is falsely accused of the explosion that has happened recently at the headquarters of the House of Elders. Now that the people of Somaliland and the opposition parties have refused to accept the extension of President Riyale’s term of office, intimidation tactics like those of the brutal Siyad Barre has started in the capital city and the Kulmiye Party is being made the scapegoat. Mujahid Ahmed landed in jail today but the story of harassing the opposition and the public continues.

News indirectly coming out from the President’s office and that of the Minister of Interior are confirming that Mujahid Mohamed Kahin’s imprisonment is being facilitated. Mujahid Mohamed Kahin is the speaker of Kulmiye Party and as Kulmiye’s official spokes person has been in the news both in Somali and English relaying what is happening in our country.

No body knows why Mujahid Mohamed Kahin is being pursued but President Dahir Riyale has gone away with the arrests of very senior and prominent politicians in recent past and he thinks he can get away with this as he has done before. Besides Dr. Gabose, Eng. Mohamed Hashi and Mujahid Jamal Aideed who sat in jail for many months in order to smother freedom of expression, there is also the arrest of Mr. Dayr Mohamed Elmi, who is one of the delegations from Togdheer and some of his colleagues remain the third day in custody at the Criminal Investigation Department. The Minister of Interior accuses him too of the explosions at the Guurti headquarters.
